In the Touhou universe; a wide variety of life exists there from myth demons and gods alike. Because they also like to eat humans or play malicious pranks as part of their nature, a system was devised to help keep demons in check, yet also let them use their abilities and fight in a non lethal manner.
Spellcards and Danmaku fights is the way main of fighting. Danmaku, or bullet hell, is essentially what it is; a bunch of bullets formed in beautiful patterns. Each Touhou character has a specific pattern set or even types of bullets unique to them, think of it as a sort of theme.
Now, for the actual ‘spellcards’.
Spellcards are a specific set of bullet patterns.
It was specified in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense that the spell card system was developed by Reimu (however, the original draft being written on a youkai contract has called this into question) and first used in the Scarlet Mist Incident. They were designed to give even weak youkai and humans a chance to win, as well as to provide youkai a way to defeat the Hakurei Shrine in a fair duel. They are described as pieces of paper bearing the descriptions of their respective spells, along with the possible approval of the shrine maiden.
There are several types of spellcards:
The regular ones are the ones where the ways to dispel the card is to time it out or by hitting them until they lose ‘concentration’ and break the card.
Then there’s the ‘Time out’ cards: These cards are the type that usually are only beaten by only timing out on the card. Its usually an endurance kind of test.
The last is the ‘Survival’ kind. This is very similar to the Time out, card, but there’s usually no way to attack back and you have to survive in order to beat the card.
Koishi’s theme deals with subconsciousness, genetics/DNA, and roses. She and her sister even share a unique type of bullet, heart shaped ones.
